Premature Babies
Understanding the Developmental Milestones of Premature Babies
During checkups, doctors play a crucial role in reassuring parents of premature babies by explaining the unique milestones these infants may experience. It is common for parents who have read various baby books to notice differences in their prematurely born baby’s development, but this is perfectly normal. Premature babies generally reach their developmental milestones based on their original due date. For instance, if a baby is born one month early, they may reach average one-month milestones at around 8 weeks of age.
Considerations
It is important for parents to consult with a medical professional if they observe any concerning signs or symptoms during the one-month exam. These signs include inadequate weight gain, insufficient wet diapers (less than six per day), and irregular bowel movements. Additionally, if the baby is excessively sleepy, excessively irritable, experiences changes in urine or stool color, or appears generally unwell, it is advisable to seek medical advice prior to the scheduled check-up.
