Preparing for the Test
Prior to commencing the test, a medical professional will prepare the participant by inserting an intravenous (IV) line and administering a radiotracer. It typically takes approximately 20 to 40 minutes for the body to fully absorb the radiotracer. Once absorbed, medical imaging techniques are employed to capture images of the body at rest. During this phase, a nurse or technician will also attach electrodes and a blood pressure cuff to monitor the participant’s vital signs.
The Testing Procedure
In order to assess cardiovascular health, the testing process involves the participant engaging in physical activity, either by walking on a treadmill or riding a stationary bike. As the test unfolds, the intensity of the exercise gradually increases, making it more challenging for the participant. The test concludes when the participant’s heart rate reaches a specific threshold or when they begin to experience any symptoms. For those who are unable to perform physical exercise, an injection is administered to simulate the effects of exercise. As the heart rate reaches its peak, a skilled technician will proceed to inject additional radiotracer into the body and capture further images.
