What We Need to Know About the MTHFR Mutation

Increased Risk of Neural Tube Defects in Women with Certain MTHFR Mutations

Women who have certain MTHFR mutations are at a higher risk of giving birth to a baby with a neural tube defect. Neural tube defects are birth defects that occur during the development of the fetal brain and spinal cord. One of the most common types of neural tube defects is anencephaly, which is a condition where parts of the brain or skull fail to fully develop. Another condition that can arise is spina bifida, where the spinal column does not completely close around the spinal cord nerves. This leads to a protrusion of the spinal cord and causes permanent damage.

Other Health Issues Associated with MTHFR Variants

Research indicates that MTHFR variants may be associated with various health problems, including heart disease, stroke, clotting disorders, autism, psychiatric conditions, and certain forms of cancer. However, it is important to note that having an MTHFR mutation does not automatically increase the risk of developing these conditions, and the exact role of the mutation in their development remains unclear.
