What Women Need to Know About IUDs

Hormonal Intrauterine Devices (IUDs)

Hormonal intrauterine devices (IUDs) are designed to release a small dose of the hormone progestin into the uterus on a daily basis, serving as a reliable method of preventing pregnancies. These IUDs operate in one of two manners, either by thickening the cervix walls to obstruct sperm from reaching the ovaries or by inhibiting ovulation altogether. With a lifespan ranging from three to seven years, this form of contraception is highly effective.

Copper Intrauterine Devices (IUDs)

Copper IUDs are widely used as a form of contraception, particularly in non-Western regions and less-developed countries. Unlike hormonal options, copper IUDs function by releasing copper ions that have a spermicidal effect, effectively preventing fertilization of eggs. The duration of effectiveness for these IUDs typically ranges from five to 10 years, and in some cases, even longer, depending on the specific brand. It is important to note that each type of copper IUD is assigned a minimum lifespan rating.
