Why Elephants?
Black Ivory Coffee’s founder had a unique idea – if civets with their small stomachs could produce such delectable coffee beans, then elephants with their larger stomachs might be able to do even better. The concept was that the elephants’ stomachs would function like a slow cooker, providing an exceptional environment for fermenting coffee beans. As the beans make their way through the elephants’ digestive tracts, they undergo a partial breakdown through a fermentation process. This process not only breaks down the beans but also releases the sugars within, thereby reducing the bitterness. It is worth noting that elephants naturally employ fermentation to break down the greens and grasses they consume, and it is through this very same fermentation process that the coffee acquires its remarkably smooth taste.
Impact of Coffee Beans on Elephants
Many individuals express concerns about the consumption of coffee beans by elephants and the potential effects of caffeine on these animals. However, due to the intact shells of the beans, the caffeine remains securely trapped within them as they pass through the elephants’ digestive systems. Consequently, there is no evidence to suggest that consuming and excreting the beans has any harmful consequences for elephants.
