What’s Up with Excessive Burping?

Conditions that Can Cause Excessive Burping

Excessive burping can be caused by various health conditions. One such condition is gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), where acid travels up the esophagus, leading to more frequent belching. Peptic ulcers, lactose intolerance, and an inability to digest certain carbohydrates are other common causes of excessive burping. Another factor that increases the likelihood of burping is the presence of the bacterial stomach infection, Helicobacter pylori.

Uncommon Causes of Burping

When it comes to burping, there are a few lesser-known medical conditions that can be the underlying cause. These conditions include celiac disease and dumping syndrome. Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder that affects the small intestine, triggered by the consumption of gluten. Along with other symptoms, individuals with celiac disease may experience excessive burping.

Dumping syndrome is another uncommon cause of burping. This condition occurs when the stomach empties its contents into the small intestine too quickly, before proper digestion has taken place. Excessive burping can be a result of this rapid emptying process.

In some cases, excessive burping may also be a symptom of pancreatic insufficiencies. Individuals with this condition have a pancreas that is unable to release the necessary enzymes for proper digestion. As a result, burping can occur as the body tries to compensate for the lack of enzyme activity.
