Diagnosis

Identifying septic shock involves several blood tests, such as blood chemistry, blood count, assessment of low oxygen level, and evaluation of acid-base disturbances. A positive identification of the bacteria causing the infection may take a few days to obtain from blood culture results. Additional diagnostic measures consist of conducting chest x-rays to assess the presence of pneumonia and examining urine samples to detect any signs of infection.

The primary objective is to initiate treatment promptly in order to combat the infection before it worsens. The first six hours are critical in determining the prognosis of the patient. By promptly and appropriately administering antibiotics, regardless of the underlying disease, the incidence of septic shock is significantly reduced.
