When to Worry About Polyuria

Understanding the Symptoms and Causes of Diabetic Ketoacidosis

Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA) is a serious condition characterized by extreme thirst and polyuria. While it primarily affects individuals with type 1 diabetes, it is worth noting that between 27 and 37 percent of those diagnosed with DKA are unaware of their condition when symptoms initially manifest. This alarming condition is also recognized as the leading cause of death for individuals under 24 years old who have type 1 diabetes. Additionally, it can impact individuals with a specific subgroup of type 2 diabetes, where their bodies are predisposed to producing ketones.

Less Common Causes

Polyuria can be caused by various factors, with Diabetes Insipidus (DI) and Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA) being the most commonly known causes. However, there are other lesser-known factors that can also contribute to excessive urination. These include the use of diuretics, lithium, caffeine, and alcohol. Additionally, abnormal levels of blood calcium, kidney failure, and sickle cell anemia can also lead to polyuria. It is worth noting that some individuals may experience polyuria temporarily after receiving contrast dye for an MRI or CT scan, typically lasting around 24 hours.
