Signs and Symptoms of Prion Diseases
Prion diseases, which primarily impact the brain, manifest through a diverse array of neurological symptoms. These signs encompass confusion, fatigue, hallucinations, muscle stiffness, progressively deteriorating dementia, and challenges with both mobility and speech. Additional motor and cognitive symptoms may surface, contingent upon the particular prion disease and the pace at which it advances.
Diagnosis
When it comes to diagnosing prion disease, healthcare providers need to be vigilant, especially in patients experiencing rapidly progressing dementia. To confirm the diagnosis or eliminate other potential conditions, a series of tests are conducted. These tests include brain MRIs to examine the brain’s structure, vision exams to assess any ocular abnormalities, blood tests to analyze different factors, neurologic exams to evaluate nerve damage, and electroencephalogram (EEG) to study brain function. In some cases, doctors may also collect spinal fluid samples for further analysis. However, the only conclusive confirmation of prion disease can be obtained through a brain tissue biopsy or an autopsy performed after the patient’s passing.
