Why Do Eyes Twitch?

Understanding Benign Essential Blepharospasm

Benign Essential Blepharospasm is a medical condition characterized by involuntary winking and blinking of the eyes. This condition typically affects both eyes and is considered chronic when the eye twitching becomes persistent. Although the exact cause of this condition is unknown, certain factors can exacerbate the spasms, leading to more frequent twitching rather than normal blinking. As the condition progresses, individuals may also experience blurry vision, heightened sensitivity to light, and even facial spasms.

Blepharitis: Causes and Symptoms

Blepharitis, also known as eyelid inflammation, is a common condition that affects the eyelids and eyelashes. The primary function of the eyelids is to protect the delicate tissues of the eyes from debris and injury. However, they can sometimes cause twitching due to various factors. The oil glands in the eyelash follicles can become irritated or blocked, leading to the development of blepharitis.

One of the main symptoms of blepharitis is itchy and swollen eyelids. The inflammation can also cause the muscles near the eyelids to spasm, resulting in discomfort and twitching sensations. If left untreated, blepharitis can lead to further complications, such as styes or red, crusty eyelids.
