Why Do People Have Hallucinations?

Non-Clinical Hallucinations

Dispelling the Myth: Hallucinations Beyond Psychosis

There is a prevailing misconception that hallucinations are solely associated with severe psychotic episodes. However, in reality, approximately 80 percent of hallucinations occur in the general population as transient and passing experiences. These non-clinical hallucinations are more prevalent among children and the elderly. Additionally, they tend to manifest during periods of heightened stress, such as fatigue or bereavement.

Effects of Drugs and Alcohol on the Brain

The consumption of alcohol and drugs, including stimulants and cannabis, can have a significant impact on the sensory areas of the brain and the central nervous system, potentially resulting in hallucinations. It is worth noting that certain prescription medications, such as those used to treat malaria and Parkinson’s disease, can also induce this side effect. Additionally, individuals who undergo withdrawal from these substances may experience hallucinations as well.
