Why Respiratory Alkalosis Shouldn’t Be Ignored

Managing Respiratory Alkalosis

Dealing with psychogenic respiratory alkalosis can be a frightening experience due to hyperventilation. To effectively treat this condition, it is important to remain calm and have a plan in place to restore CO2 levels. There are a couple of methods that can be employed. One approach involves exhaling into a paper or plastic bag and then inhaling the carbon dioxide back into the lungs several times. Alternatively, reducing the intake of oxygen by covering the mouth and closing one nostril while breathing through the other nostril can also be beneficial.

Prevention of Respiratory Alkalosis

To prevent respiratory alkalosis, it is important to address the underlying cause of hyperventilation. Seeking counseling can be helpful in identifying and addressing stress and anxiety triggers. Developing effective coping mechanisms, such as exercise, meditation, and corrective breathing techniques, can also be beneficial in preventing hyperventilation. However, if these methods prove ineffective, medication may be necessary.
