Xylitol: What You Need to Know

Xylitol Benefits: Managing Diabetes

Xylitol offers a beneficial alternative for managing diabetes and controlling blood sugar levels. A study conducted by the American Diabetes Association revealed that unlike sugar, xylitol does not affect the balance of glucose and insulin in the body as it is not metabolized. With a glycemic index (GI) ranging from seven to 13, xylitol has a significantly lower impact on blood sugar levels compared to table sugar, which has a GI between 68 and 100. Government studies have also shown that while xylitol may lead to a slight increase in blood sugar, it does not have the same effect on blood sugar levels as refined carbohydrates.

Xylitol Benefits: Improving Ear and Sinus Health

Research suggests that xylitol can have positive effects on ear and sinus health by inhibiting the growth of bacteria responsible for causing infections. Specifically, it has been found that xylitol prevents Streptococcus pneumoniae from attaching to tissue and forming colonies, thus enhancing the effectiveness of treatments for ear and nasal sinus infections, such as nasal irrigation. Clinical studies have even shown that approximately 40% of children who consumed xylitol in the form of gum or syrup experienced a reduction in the frequency of middle ear infections.
