Yoga Poses and Stretches to Relieve Back Pain

Kneeling Lunge: Loosen Your Hips and Relieve Back and Hip Pain

The kneeling lunge stretch is an effective way to alleviate back and hip pain caused by tight hip flexor muscles. These muscles, when overly tight, can negatively affect posture and result in discomfort. By incorporating the kneeling lunge into your routine, you can release tension in these muscles and experience relief in your back and hips.

To perform the kneeling lunge, start by kneeling on the ground. Bring one foot forward, ensuring that your shin forms a 90-degree angle with the floor. As you do this, allow your hips to sink down, maintaining a forward gaze and relaxed shoulders. If you experience any discomfort or pressure, consider padding the knee that is on the ground to alleviate any potential pain.

Piriformis Stretch

If you are experiencing back pain that is related to your hip muscles, one effective option to consider is the piriformis stretch. This stretch can be done in conjunction with other poses such as the cat and cow poses and the kneeling lunge. The piriformis muscles are located in the inner thigh, and stretching them can help alleviate sciatica pain and increase hip flexibility. To perform this stretch, start by lying down on the floor with your knees bent and your feet flat on the floor. Allow your knees to fall open, bringing the soles of your feet together. Relax and let your body sink into the stretch.
