Your Baby’s Development at 18 Months

Signs of Developmental Issues in 18-Month-Olds

While it’s common for children to take their first steps around 12 months, studies have shown that some may not begin walking until they are between 16 and 18 months old. Although this is considered normal, it’s important for parents to be aware of potential developmental issues if their child is not walking by 20 months of age. In addition to delayed walking, here are some other warning signs to watch for in 18-month-olds:

Understanding Parental Expectations

It is well-established that children reach developmental milestones at different times. For instance, some children may start walking or talking later than their peers, but this does not mean they are any less capable. Research has shown that by the time they reach school age, these children catch up to their peers who hit these milestones earlier. Therefore, child behavior experts advise parents against strictly adhering to milestone charts or comparing their child’s progress solely based on age.

Despite this, it is important for parents to trust their instincts. If a parent genuinely feels that their child is not meeting the expected milestones by the age of 18 months, it is recommended to consult their pediatrician for further evaluation and guidance.
