10 Causes, Risks, and Complications of Lyme Disease

Host Animals

Ticks go through various stages of life, starting from an egg. During these stages, they feed on different animals. The primary infection of ticks with the bacteria Borrelia Burgdorferi usually occurs when they are in the larval or nymph stage. At this stage, ticks feed on small animals like squirrels or mice, which act as carriers of the bacteria. Consequently, when an infected tick feeds on its next host, be it a human or another animal, it can transmit the bacteria to them.

Transmission of Lyme Disease: Not Person-to-Person

Dispelling common misconceptions, there is no substantiated evidence to suggest that Lyme disease can be transmitted from person-to-person. Contrary to popular belief, simply touching or kissing an individual with Lyme disease does not result in infection. The only way for someone to contract Lyme disease is through a tick bite from an infected tick.
