Transmission of Lyme Disease from Pets
Contrary to popular belief, it is not possible for humans to contract Lyme disease from their beloved pets. Although dogs and cats can indeed become infected with the disease, there is no evidence to suggest that the virus can be directly transmitted from pets to their owners. However, it is worth noting that pets can inadvertently introduce infected ticks into their homes or yards. Hence, it is crucial for individuals to take necessary precautions to safeguard themselves as well as their furry companions against Lyme disease.
How Lyme Disease is Contracted
Lyme disease in the United States is caused by a specific bacterium that is primarily carried by deer ticks. These ticks are typically brown in color and can be as small as a poppy seed, making them extremely difficult to detect. The transmission of the bacterium that leads to Lyme disease occurs when an infected deer tick bites a person. The bacterium enters the person’s skin through the tick bite. It is important to note that a deer tick usually needs to be attached to a person for around 36 to 48 hours in order to transmit the virus. Unfortunately, due to their small size and the painless nature of their bite, people may not be aware of the presence of deer ticks during this time.
