10 Common Chest Pain Symptoms and What They Might Mean

Recognizing the Symptoms: Heart-Squeezing Sensation

When it comes to angina, some individuals may experience a heart-squeezing sensation, as if their heart is being tightly compressed by a hand. Although this description may sound alarming, angina itself is a rather common condition that affects approximately nine million Americans and continues to increase in prevalence. It is important to note that unlike cardiac arrest, angina does not cause any permanent damage to the heart.

Angina typically manifests in two primary forms: stable angina and unstable angina. Stable angina tends to come and go, typically occurring when the heart is exerting itself more than usual. On the other hand, unstable angina can occur suddenly, even when the individual is at rest. This form of angina is considered more severe and significantly raises the risk of a heart attack.

Symptom: Sharp, Needle-Like Pain

Experiencing sharp, needle-like pain can be a symptom of panic and anxiety attacks. These attacks can be quite deceptive, as they may resemble the symptoms of a heart attack and appear to come out of nowhere. Chest pain caused by anxiety is often accompanied by shortness of breath and rapid heart palpitations. It is common for individuals to mistake anxiety attacks for heart attacks. However, if you are prone to anxiety and the pain feels more like a needle than tightness in the chest, it is likely related to anxiety.
