Signs of Inflammation in the Colon: Diverticulitis

Bleeding from the Rectum: A Common Symptom of Diverticulitis

One of the common symptoms experienced by individuals with diverticulitis is rectal bleeding. This occurs when feces get trapped in the diverticula, leading to the rupture of small blood vessels. Over time, the accumulated waste can cause heavy or gradual bleeding, which becomes noticeable in the stool. It is crucial to seek immediate medical attention if heavy rectal bleeding is experienced, along with a high fever, severe abdominal pain, or repeated vomiting.

Understanding Inflammation and Diverticulitis

Diverticulitis occurs when the diverticula, small pouches that form in the weak areas of the large intestines, become inflamed and infected. This inflammation is often a result of prolonged retention of waste in the diverticula. When the infection spreads, it can lead to various symptoms including inflammation and distension of the lower belly.

The inflammation caused by diverticulitis can be aggravated by any additional pressure in the affected region. This increased pressure not only worsens the inflammation but can also cause discomfort and even shortness of breath.
