Spondylolisthesis: When Vertebrae Shift Out of Place
Spondylolisthesis is a medical condition characterized by the displacement of one vertebra in the spine, causing it to shift and rest on top of another vertebra. While it can occur in anyone, individuals with Marfan syndrome are more prone to developing this condition, which often leads to stiffness and back pain. It’s important to note that not all cases of spondylolisthesis are associated with Marfan syndrome, but the likelihood of experiencing it is significantly higher for those who have this syndrome.
Dural Ectasia
Dural ectasia is a condition characterized by the weakening and expansion of the dura, the membrane that lines the brain and spinal cord. Individuals with Marfan syndrome are particularly susceptible to this condition. As the dura weakens, it exerts pressure on the vertebrae in the lower back, resulting in severe backaches. Additionally, dural ectasia can cause headaches, numbness, and pain in the legs.
