Foods That Trigger Gout and How To Prevent Flares

Sugary Drinks

Sodas, sugar-sweetened teas and other sweet drinks often contain large amounts of high-fructose corn syrup. Consuming large amounts of fructose will stimulate the body’s production of uric acid, and this increases a patient’s risk of experiencing flares. Herbal teas, cocoa, coffee and fruit-sweetened beverages are safer beverage choices for individuals with gout.

Certain Vegetables

Although it’s important for gout patients to eat plenty of vegetables, some vegetables are too high in purines to be included in a gout patient’s diet. Doctors recommend that these patients avoid mushrooms, peas, spinach, cauliflower and asparagus. Fava beans and chickpeas should be eliminated, too. Instead, patients can eat lower-purine vegetables, including broccoli, green peppers and bean sprouts.
