10 Kidney Infection Signs and Symptoms

2. Edema or Swelling

Edema is the clinical term for when excess salts and water collect in the body. The kidneys are responsible for removing excess water and other waste from the body. If the kidney cannot do this due to an infection, then the byproducts collect and cause kidney damage and swelling.

This swelling most often occurs in the hands, ankles and feet. While it can happen at any point in the day, it’s most common during the morning. Facial swelling is less common, but some people experience this as well.

3. Vomiting and Nausea

These symptoms tend to be mild. You may feel nauseous from dehydration. Your body will be increasing urination in order to remove toxins. This leads to feeling sick to your stomach and vomiting. You may also lose weight and lose your appetite as well. Some people feel consistent pain or pressure in the abdomen. This could also be due to the antibiotics that treat kidney infections as nausea is a fairly common side effect.
