Recurrent Urinary Tract Infections and Their Similarities to Bladder Cancer
Recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs) can sometimes share similar symptoms and signs with bladder cancer, leading to misdiagnosis. While bladder cancer itself does not directly cause UTIs, the presentation of both conditions can be quite alike. In some cases, when a physician hears the symptoms and identifies blood in the urine during a urinalysis, they may mistakenly diagnose it as a common UTI and prescribe antibiotics. However, if an individual experiences persistent UTIs without any apparent cause, it could be an indication of an underlying and more serious condition, such as bladder cancer.
Weight Loss and Bladder Cancer
Weight loss is a prevalent symptom associated with various types of cancer, including bladder cancer. There are multiple factors contributing to this phenomenon. One reason is the body’s immune response to the cancerous cells, which triggers a cascade of events leading to weight loss. Additionally, loss of appetite commonly accompanies cancer, further exacerbating the weight loss.
When the body detects cancer, the immune system releases substances known as cytokines to combat the malignant cells. However, these cytokines can also impact metabolism, resulting in the breakdown of muscle and fat tissues. This metabolic alteration ultimately leads to weight loss in individuals with bladder cancer.
