10 Symptoms of an ACL Tear

Understanding Swelling after an ACL Tear

Shortly after sustaining an ACL injury, it is common to experience swelling in the affected area. This swelling occurs as a result of fluids, including blood from the tear, accumulating around and within the injured ligament. Since there is typically no open wound to release this excess blood, it accumulates beneath the skin surrounding the torn ligament. To alleviate swelling, it is important to promptly apply ice to the injury.

Signs of Inflammation in an ACL Injury

When you have an ACL injury, one common sign of inflammation is that the affected area will feel warm to the touch. This warmth is caused by the accumulation of fluid and blood around the tear, resulting in increased inflammation. It is important to address the swelling promptly, as untreated swelling can lead to further inflammation.
