Flushing is particularly prevalent among about 75 percent of patients with a carcinoid tumor, and can be triggered by activities such as exercising, experiencing stress, consuming alcohol, and eating certain foods. However, it is important to note that flushing may also occur spontaneously without any specific precipitating factors.
The release of histamine in the stomach carcinoid tumor may be responsible for the flushing phenomenon. Histamine, a chemical compound, causes the dilation of blood vessels, resulting in increased blood flow to the affected area. Consequently, the affected area may appear red in color due to this increased blood supply.
Understanding Diarrhea in Carcinoid Tumor Patients
Diarrhea is a prevalent issue among individuals with a carcinoid tumor. It can manifest with or without accompanying symptoms such as flushing. The intensity of diarrhea differs from person to person, with some experiencing severe episodes that significantly impact their daily life, causing them to feel apprehensive about leaving their home. However, the primary concern associated with diarrhea is the risk of dehydration. This occurs when the body loses significant amounts of water and electrolytes due to persistent diarrhea.
