Understanding the Effects of Low Self-Esteem
Experiencing difficulties in fulfilling one’s responsibilities can have adverse effects on a person’s relationships with their loved ones. Often, individuals struggling with depression may incorrectly attribute their social isolation to personal shortcomings, leading to a significant decline in their self-esteem. Consequently, this negative self-perception sets off a vicious cycle of self-doubt and pessimism.
Guilt and Depression
One of the common emotional experiences for individuals with depression is the development of irrational or disproportionate feelings of guilt. Regardless of whether these feelings are justified or not, the emotional response is often much stronger than what a mentally healthy person would experience in similar circumstances. Furthermore, the inability to address the underlying causes of guilt can lead to a downward spiral of emotions, intensifying other symptoms such as social withdrawal and diminished self-worth.
