10 Symptoms of Hemophilia

Hemophilia is a rare genetic disorder that hinders the normal clotting process of blood. Primarily affecting males, this condition is inherited from parents and is caused by a deficiency of specific blood clotting factors. These factors are crucial for the formation of blood clots in the body.

There are two main types of hemophilia: type A and type B. Hemophilia A occurs in approximately one in 5,000 to 10,000 males, while hemophilia B occurs in roughly one in 40,000 males. On the other hand, hemophilia C is an extremely rare form of the condition.

The symptoms and signs of hemophilia can vary depending on the severity of the condition and are generally associated with the effects of internal or external bleeding. Many individuals with hemophilia experience mild or moderate forms of the disorder, and in such cases, the initial indication may not manifest until later in life.

Bleeding Following Minor Medical Procedures

Experiencing bleeding after minor medical procedures can serve as an initial indicator for individuals with mild hemophilia. This occurrence may be the first time the patient or doctor becomes aware of prolonged bleeding. For instance, an adult who has never encountered any bleeding issues before may notice prolonged bleeding following a tooth extraction. Additionally, a vaccination can result in bruising that extends along the length of the arm. Moreover, excessive bleeding subsequent to circumcision surgery in infants can serve as an early indication of hemophilia, with 50% of newborns with hemophilia experiencing this symptom. Furthermore, the heel prick test babies undergo around five days after birth may also lead to prolonged bleeding.

Gum Bleeding and Nosebleeds

Indications of moderate or severe hemophilia often include frequent nosebleeds that are difficult to control. These nosebleeds can occur spontaneously or after minor injuries. In addition, bleeding from the gums and mouth can also happen during routine activities like brushing or flossing.
