10 Symptoms of a Hiatal Hernia

Sliding Hiatal Hernia

Hiatal hernias fall into one of two categories as they increase in severity and size. A sliding hernia is when the stomach and gastroesophageal area go into the chest. These hernias tend to be small and are known for their ability to move in the cavity without being in a fixed place. This tends to have fewer symptoms than the other hiatal hernia, and it’s more common. Some might experience no symptoms while others have indigestion, heartburn, nausea and regurgitation.

Paraesophageal Hiatal Hernia

This is the other type of hiatal hernia and it’s more severe. Unlike a sliding hernia that can move back and forth, this hernia makes the esophagus slide up without moving back down. This can make food stick out from the esophagus. This hernia may also twist and contort the esophagus, which cuts off blood to the area. Those with this hernia will feel difficulty swallowing and acid reflux along with chest pain and bloating. This may turn into an incarcerated hernia if the hernia widens.
