10 Symptoms of Necrotizing Enterocolitis

Signs of High Gastric Residuals in Infants

When a doctor suspects that an infant may have a feeding intolerance, one of the diagnostic measures they may recommend is checking for high levels of gastric residuals. Gastric residuals refer to the fluids that remain in the stomach after a feeding. If an infant has a significant amount of fluid lingering in their stomach, it indicates a high level of gastric residuals. This condition can be an indicator of feeding intolerance and a potential risk factor for necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC). Infants who are fed through a feeding tube are particularly vulnerable to experiencing this symptom.

Understanding Abdominal Distension

Abdominal distension is a condition characterized by the build-up of fluids or gases in the abdomen, resulting in significant bloating and swelling. When an infant experiences abdominal distension, their stomach may appear larger than the rest of their body, and they might exhibit signs of pain or discomfort. In cases of Necrotizing Enterocolitis (NEC), this symptom is typically accompanied by difficulties in tolerating feedings.
