Rashes
One of the symptoms that some individuals may experience with West Nile infections is the development of a red rash. This rash typically appears on the upper back, neck, and chest, primarily affecting the trunk of the body. In certain cases, the rash may also spread to the upper arms, legs, palms of the hands, soles of the feet, or even the face. In more severe instances, the rash can extend across the entire torso and limbs. The characteristic features of this rash include small, raised or flat dots that are red in color, with a pink or red discoloration.
Encephalitis and Meningitis
When a severe case of West Nile infection occurs, it can result in symptoms that are similar to those of neurological diseases like encephalitis, which is inflammation of the brain, and meningitis, which is inflammation of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord. In some cases, individuals with West Nile encephalitis or meningitis may also experience additional symptoms, such as tremors and confusion, which can progress to coma and even death. It is important to note, however, that these severe outcomes are rare, as only one percent of people infected with the West Nile virus develop nervous system complications.
