Nyctophobia: Fear of the Dark

While it is common for small children to be afraid of the dark, nyctophobia is a term used to describe the persistence of this fear into adulthood. Unlike a simple fear of darkness, nyctophobia is characterized by an underlying fear of the unknown dangers that may be present in the darkness. When the lights go off, individuals with nyctophobia may experience heightened anxiety symptoms such as an accelerated heart rate, sweating, and nausea. While some find relief by sleeping with a nightlight, others require a brightly lit room to feel comfortable. The presence of nyctophobia can significantly disrupt one’s ability to sleep and can create challenges in cohabitating with someone who prefers darkness during sleep.
