All About Blood Thinners

Antiplatelet Drugs

People who have experienced a heart attack or stroke may be prescribed antiplatelet medication. These drugs are classified as blood thinners and work by preventing platelets from clumping together and forming blood clots. Typically, doctors will prescribe a combination of two types of antiplatelet drugs: acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) and a P2Y12 inhibitor. This drug therapy is also sometimes recommended for individuals at a higher risk for venous thromboembolisms (VTEs) to prevent heart attacks and strokes. Most commonly, antiplatelet drugs are administered orally by doctors.

Other Medical Conditions that May Benefit from Antiplatelets

Antiplatelets are not only prescribed to individuals with coronary artery disease but also to those who have undergone coronary artery bypass grafting. In certain cases, when a patient’s artery becomes clogged, a stent may be surgically inserted to maintain its openness and prevent the occurrence of blood clots which can potentially lead to a heart attack. Antiplatelets play a crucial role in the treatment of these patients as they aid in preventing the formation of additional clots.
