All About the Vulva

Lichen Sclerosus: A Skin Disorder Affecting Women

Lichen sclerosus is a skin disorder that primarily affects women, although it can occur at any age. However, it is more commonly observed after menopause. This noncontagious condition specifically targets the vulvar skin, particularly the labia, leading to itchiness and the development of white spots. In severe cases, blistering and bleeding may also occur. To manage this condition effectively, corticosteroids are commonly prescribed. It is important to take these medications regularly to prevent recurrence of symptoms.

Vulvodynia: Unexplained Pain in the Vulvar Region

Vulvodynia is a condition that affects some women, causing unexplained burning, aching, or pain in the vulvar region. Despite the vulva appearing normal, the pain can be triggered by various activities such as touch, sexual intercourse, tampon use, or even regular daily tasks. The exact cause of vulvodynia remains unknown, and in some cases, the condition may resolve on its own. However, for those who require intervention, medications and, in severe cases, surgery can be used to manage the symptoms.
