All About Typhoid Fever

Vaccines for Typhoid Fever

When it comes to typhoid fever, vaccination is not a routine practice for individuals in the United States due to the rarity of the disease. However, those planning to visit countries where typhoid fever is prevalent have two vaccine options to consider.

The first vaccine, known as Ty21a, is taken orally and offers moderate effectiveness for a duration of two years. However, it is important to note that this vaccine is only suitable for individuals who are at least six years old.

The second vaccine, ViCPS, is injectable and has been shown to reduce the risk of contracting the disease by two-thirds. However, it is only recommended for individuals who are at least two years old.

The Mysterious Plague that Ravaged Athens

During the years 430 to 426 B.C., a devastating plague made its way from Ethiopia to the ancient city of Athens in Greece, leaving an indelible mark on Grecian history. Historical records indicate that this outbreak resulted in the deaths of approximately one-third of the Athenian population, although identifying the exact disease responsible has been a subject of much debate among scientists and scholars. Presently, one prevailing theory is that the plague was caused by typhoid fever, as this explanation aligns with the descriptions provided by those who managed to survive this harrowing ordeal.
