All About von Willebrand Disease

Causes

Von Willebrand disease is primarily caused by a genetic abnormality that affects the von Willebrand factor (vWF) gene. The vWF gene is responsible for producing a crucial protein that aids in blood clotting. In individuals with this condition, there is either a deficiency in the quantity or quality of vWF. As a result, the platelets in their blood are unable to adhere to each other effectively and fail to bind to the walls of blood vessels. Consequently, the body is unable to form blood clots or effectively control blood flow.

Types of von Willebrand Disease

Von Willebrand disease is a genetic bleeding disorder that affects the blood’s ability to clot. There are several types of von Willebrand disease, each with its own unique characteristics and symptoms. Understanding the different types can help individuals and healthcare professionals better manage and treat the condition.
