Prevention
Can von Willebrand disease be prevented? Unfortunately, there is currently no known method to prevent the inheritance of von Willebrand disease. However, individuals who have concerns about the disease and are thinking of starting a family should consider seeking genetic counseling. This is especially important for those who have a family history of von Willebrand disease. It is important to note that it is possible to carry the abnormal gene responsible for the disease without displaying any symptoms. This means that one can unknowingly pass on the condition to their children.
Diagnosis
Diagnosing von Willebrand disease at an early stage is crucial for maintaining a normal and active lifestyle. However, it can be challenging for physicians to identify the disease. Symptoms are not always apparent in individuals with type 1 and type 2 von Willebrand disease until they experience excessive bleeding following a medical or dental procedure. To diagnose the disease, doctors conduct a series of blood tests. These tests may involve evaluating von Willebrand factor (vWF) levels or assessing clotting activity. In some cases, general physicians may refer patients to a hematologist for further confirmation of the diagnosis.
