Blood Under the Nail: Subungual Hematoma

Complications of Subungual Hematomas

Subungual hematomas can lead to various complications if not properly treated by a medical professional. One such complication is the risk of infection. Without prompt attention to a more severe injury, infections can occur, causing inflammation and swelling of the tissues surrounding the affected nail bed. In some cases, pus may even accumulate around the nail bed, requiring treatment with antibiotics and potentially necessitating the removal of the nail.

Recovery from Subungual Hematoma

When a subungual hematoma is minor and doesn’t require medical attention, the blood accumulation will naturally dissipate within a few weeks. However, the process of new nail growth may take anywhere between six to nine months. In more severe cases, especially if the nail bed has been significantly affected, the regrown nail may have a permanent deformity.
