Prevalence of Fissured Tongue
Fissured tongue is a prevalent condition that affects a significant percentage of the population. Studies have shown that approximately 6.8 to 11% of people experience this condition. It is interesting to note that fissured tongue appears to be more common in males compared to females. Furthermore, the prevalence of this condition significantly increases with age. In fact, around 40% of individuals aged 40 and above have been found to have fissured tongues. It is important to note that fissured tongue is not contagious, meaning it cannot be transmitted from one person to another.
Classification of Fissured Tongue
Several studies have proposed additional classification systems for fissured tongue in order to help doctors identify any potential correlations with other conditions. One particular study suggested classifying the fissures based on their location on the tongue, highlighting that central fissuring is the most frequently observed type. On the other hand, many health organizations prefer to classify the condition based on the number and size of the grooves, rather than their specific location.
