Causes of Low Hemoglobin

Understanding Chronic Bleeding

Chronic bleeding can manifest in various forms, ranging from heavy menstrual bleeding to internal bleeding occurring within the body. Notably, bleeding in the stomach, small intestine, and large bowel poses a higher risk of causing low hemoglobin levels. Surprisingly, another lesser-known cause of chronic bleeding is excessive blood draws. This primarily affects individuals who undergo multiple blood draws for medical purposes, including blood donation. Although chronic internal bleeding alone can be perilous, the situation becomes even more critical when combined with low hemoglobin levels.

Sickle Cell Anemia: A Condition that Deteriorates Red Blood Cells

Sickle cell anemia is a condition characterized by the accelerated destruction of red blood cells, surpassing the body’s ability to produce them. Under normal circumstances, red blood cells have a lifespan of approximately 120 days. However, in sickle cell anemia, these cells have a significantly reduced lifespan, resulting in a shortage. The root cause of this disease lies in the presence of a defective form of hemoglobin. Although a complete cure remains elusive, numerous treatment options are available to manage the associated symptoms.
