Causes of Vaginal Itching

Understanding Trichomoniasis

Trichomoniasis is a prevalent sexually transmitted infection caused by a parasite known as Trichomonas vaginalis. This condition primarily affects women, particularly those who are older. The parasite infects various parts of the reproductive system, including the vulva, vagina, urethra, or cervix. As a result, it disrupts the natural balance of microorganisms in the vaginal environment. Interestingly, approximately two-thirds of individuals infected with Trichomoniasis do not experience any noticeable symptoms. However, for others, it can lead to uncomfortable symptoms such as genital itching, burning sensation, and redness.

Infection-Related Cyclic Vulvovaginitis

Cyclic vulvovaginitis refers to the occurrence of vaginal itching at the same time during a woman’s menstrual cycle each month. This condition is often caused by an infection. One common infection that leads to cyclic vulvovaginitis is Candida albicans, commonly known as thrush or a yeast infection. Many women experience this recurrent infection during their periods.

The symptoms of infection-related cyclic vulvovaginitis include itchy labia that burn and sting, making sexual intercourse painful. In addition, the skin in the affected area can become cracked and dry, which further increases the risk of contracting other infections.
