Treatment: Voice Therapy
Voice therapy, a form of treatment similar to physical therapy for larger muscles, focuses on strengthening the vocal cords through specific exercises. A trained therapist guides the patient through these exercises, aiming to enhance their control over breath, tone, and volume during speech. Therapists also prioritize addressing the risk of aspiration, often dedicating considerable time to practicing exercises that protect the airways. Additionally, voice therapy includes exercises to prevent muscle tension in the surrounding areas of the vocal cords.
Treatment: Bulk Injection
When vocal cord paralysis is caused by nerve damage, the muscles of the vocal cords may weaken. In such cases, surgeons often opt for a procedure known as bulk injection. During this procedure, the vocal cord is injected with substances like collagen, fat, or other medical fillers to increase its size. By adding weight and bulk, the vocal cord is pulled closer to the center of the larynx, which can have a positive effect on the paralyzed cord. This allows for improved movement during activities such as coughing, swallowing, or speaking.
