Codependence: Losing Your Sense of Self

Signs and Symptoms

When it comes to identifying signs and symptoms of a particular condition, it is crucial to be aware of the key indicators. Recognizing these signs early on can help in prompt diagnosis and treatment. Here are some common signs and symptoms to watch out for:

Codependent Characteristics

Gender does not determine who can exhibit codependent behavior. In a study conducted in the 1990s, researchers found that both women and men displayed codependent traits, although the characteristics varied slightly between genders. The study revealed that women exhibited five key characteristics: control, exaggerated responsibility, worth dependency, rescue orientation, and change orientation. On the other hand, men showed two of these characteristics: control and exaggerated responsibility.

Codependent individuals often find it challenging to leave a relationship, even if it fails to provide emotional satisfaction. This reluctance stems from a compulsive need to maintain a connection with the other person.
