Common Causes of Lethargy

The Link Between COPD and Emphysema

Emphysema plays a significant role in the development of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), a condition characterized by persistent lung inflammation that causes breathing difficulties, increased mucus production, coughing, and wheezing. More specifically, emphysema primarily affects the alveoli – tiny air sacs located at the ends of the bronchioles within the lungs. This condition typically arises due to prolonged exposure to irritants such as cigarette smoke or other airborne particles. The combined effects of COPD and emphysema impair the body’s ability to obtain sufficient oxygen, resulting in feelings of fatigue and lethargy.

Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is a condition characterized by musculoskeletal pain, as well as problems with mood and memory. A prominent symptom of this disorder is lethargy, or a persistent feeling of tiredness and lack of energy. Experts in the field believe that fibromyalgia is caused by the way the brain processes pain signals from the body. Furthermore, research indicates that there may be a connection between fibromyalgia, anxiety, depression, and the lethargy experienced by individuals with this condition.
