Dry Cough: A Symptom of Many Things

Understanding Post-Nasal Drip

Post-nasal drip is a condition characterized by the slow and continuous flow of mucus from the sinuses to the throat, leading to irritation and frequently causing a dry cough. There are various factors that contribute to the occurrence of post-nasal drip, such as allergies, viral infections, airborne irritants, and even pregnancy.

Medication-Induced Cough

One common side effect of ACE inhibitors, which are commonly prescribed for high blood pressure, is a medication-induced dry cough. Approximately 20% of individuals who take these medications experience this type of cough. In fact, a study found that around 19% of patients discontinued the use of these medications due to the persistent coughing side effect.
