Outcomes of Edwards Syndrome
Edwards syndrome, also known as trisomy 18, has significant impacts on various body systems and can lead to life-threatening medical complications. As a result, a significant number of affected children either do not survive the prenatal period or pass away within the first month of life. However, there is a small percentage, around five to 10%, who manage to live beyond their first year. Despite facing developmental delays and profound intellectual disabilities, these children can still flourish when provided with a nurturing and supportive environment.
Support for Families of Children With Edwards Syndrome
Discovering that your child has Edwards syndrome can be a challenging experience. However, there are numerous organizations available to offer support, information, resources, and encouragement to families in similar situations. Two prominent examples are the Trisomy 18 Foundation and SOFT, both of which aim to unite families affected by trisomy 18 and promote awareness of this disorder.
