Extrasystole: Causes of Heart Palpitations

The Importance of Potassium in the Body

Potassium plays a crucial role in the proper functioning of our body. As an electrolyte, it aids in the movement of blood through the heart and the entire circulatory system. Not only does it support the electrical activity of the heart, but it is also essential for the optimal functioning of the kidneys, muscles, and nerves. All of these factors contribute to maintaining a healthy cardiovascular system. However, it is important to note that an excessive amount of potassium in the bloodstream, a condition known as hyperkalemia, can lead to various complications. These include palpitations and irregularities in cardiac rhythm, such as the potentially life-threatening ventricular fibrillation.

Understanding Cardiomyopathy

Cardiomyopathy refers to the condition where the heart enlarges abnormally, leading to its reduced ability to efficiently pump blood throughout the body. This impaired pumping function affects the kidneys’ ability to filter blood effectively, resulting in fluid retention that leads to congestion and swelling, primarily in the arms and legs. While some individuals with cardiomyopathy may not experience any symptoms, others may mistake the symptoms for unrelated health issues. As the condition progresses, individuals may experience shortness of breath and fatigue. In addition, they may develop an arrhythmia, which causes irregular heartbeats, such as extrasystole heartbeats, dizziness, and even fainting.
