Functions of the Menisci
The menisci serve various crucial functions within the knee joint. These functions include shock absorption during normal gait, which plays a significant role in the prevention of osteoarthritis. Additionally, the concave shape and structure of the menisci contribute to joint stability by limiting excessive movement. Although the exact mechanism remains unknown, researchers suggest that the menisci also play a role in knee lubrication. It is believed that they may compress synovial fluid within the knee joint, thereby reducing friction and minimizing wear.
Aging
Understanding the impact of aging on the menisci is a complex process. As time passes, the meniscal tissue undergoes changes that result in reduced flexibility and loss of elasticity. Additionally, an increase in fibrous tissue occurs as the cellular components diminish, making the menisci more susceptible to injury. Furthermore, collagen production and reserves decline significantly after the age of 80, and the proportions of proteoglycans also shift as one grows older.
