Frequently Asked Questions about a Mediastinoscopy

Post-Procedure Hospital Experience: What to Anticipate

Upon regaining consciousness following your surgery, you will find yourself in a recovery unit under the vigilant care of a nurse. Oxygen will be administered to you through a tube to aid in your recovery. Once the nurse ensures your well-being and comfort, they may offer you a meal and some fluids to drink. Additionally, the nurse might conduct chest X-rays to verify the success of the procedure.

Recovering at Home: What to Expect

After undergoing the procedure, it is common to experience temporary discomfort for a period of one to three days. This discomfort will primarily be felt around the incision site. It is also normal to experience hoarseness or a sore throat along with the pain near the cut. During this time, it is recommended to consume soft foods to avoid putting additional stress on the throat or incision. If the pain worsens or if a sore throat persists for more than three days, it is important to contact your doctor. Additionally, your doctor will schedule a follow-up visit for you within the next two weeks to monitor your recovery progress.
