Is Cerebral Angiography Painful?
One common concern patients have before undergoing cerebral angiography is whether or not they will experience pain during the procedure. Rest assured, the comfort of the patient is of utmost importance to the examiner.
While you may feel a slight pinprick or pinch during the placement of the IV, you will not experience any pain during the actual imaging procedure. To ensure your comfort, the doctor may also administer sedatives or pain medications, allowing you to remain relaxed throughout the cerebral angiography.
What to Expect After Cerebral Angiography?
After undergoing cerebral angiography, there are a few sensations and precautions to be aware of. Initially, you may experience a slight pinch when the doctor inserts the IV line into your vein. Additionally, you may feel a mild sensation when the examiner administers the local anesthetic.
It is important to note that the arteries themselves do not have any sensation. Any discomfort or sensation related to the procedure will only be felt at the site of the skin’s incision.
Once the procedure is completed, the examiner will remove the catheter and immediately apply pressure to the puncture site to ensure that there is no bleeding. It typically takes around 10 minutes for the small hole in your artery to close.
Following the procedure, you are generally allowed to resume your regular diet without any restrictions. However, it is recommended to wait for approximately 12 hours before engaging in any strenuous activities or tasks that may put excessive strain on the body.
