How COVID-19 Affected the Mental Health of Children

Anxiety

Anxiety is becoming increasingly prevalent among children, in addition to the rise in depressive symptoms. Even younger children are grappling with anxious feelings that often reflect their caregivers’ concerns, such as worries about having enough food or a stable place to live. Furthermore, individuals of all age groups have exhibited anxiety towards the illness itself, and this anxiety tends to intensify when one has more family members or friends who have tested positive for COVID-19.

Effects of Stress on Children During the Pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on stress levels among children, leading to a rise in stress-related conditions. According to experts, many children have displayed signs of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), with over 3% meeting the diagnostic criteria for the condition.

It has been observed that COVID-related stressors can vary greatly among children. However, there are a few common triggers that contribute to their distress. Social isolation, as a result of lockdowns and restrictions, has been a major factor affecting their mental well-being. Additionally, exposure to constant COVID media coverage has further intensified their anxiety. The ever-changing schooling processes and demands have also played a significant role in increasing stress levels among children.
